About the Author

Ceil Lucas is Professor Emerita, retired from Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, where she taught linguistics from 1982 to 2013 through American Sign Language (ASL). She holds a BA in French and art history from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and a PhD in sociolinguistics from Georgetown University. Co-author and editor of many articles and books on the structure and use of sign languages, she has also created materials for teaching language, including ESL. She started teaching Italian in 1973 and continues to do so. Lucas lives in Maryland.
